One year more, Copernicus Hackathon 2020 in Athens finished successfully, with a high level of the participants. NEANIAS project has been fully involved with the event, since the innovation and the search for technological solutions to today's challenges in our environment is part of our essence. The teams have carried out an outstanding work, and that is the best result for us.
NEANIAS (Novel EOSC Services for Emerging Atmosphere, Underwater & Space Challenges) will promote Open Science practices and play active role in the materialization of the EOSC ecosystem by efficiently engaging large scientific and professional communities; actively contributing to the technological, procedural, strategic and business development of EOSC.
NEANIAS, by taking the principles of open innovation into account is working rapidly on developing the services regarding the Underwater, Atmospheric and Space thematic fields. In the frame of WP5, on defining the business cases, the potential end-users are involved in testing and designing each service of NEANIAS. By involving the end-users, NEANIAS services will be developed in align with the needs of end-users by meeting their specific requirements while testing and integrating their services in their everyday circumstances.
In the last decade, millimetric radioastronomy has been the spearhead of multiple breakthrough discoveries that have improved significantly our knowledge of the Universe, with instruments such as ALMA comparable to the best optical and infrared telescopes in terms of sensitivity and angular resolution. But we are on the edge of a new revolution. The Square-Kilometre Array (SKA), an international collaborative project involving more than 100 scientific and technological partners from 20 countries, will become the largest radio interferometer ever built.
NEANIAS aims at contributing to the materialization of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by delivering innovative thematic services in the Underwater, Atmospheric and Space research sectors.
Field studies and data collection are vital for mapping and understanding the active geological processes on Earth, particularly for those that induced superficial deformations like earthquakes and shallow magmatic processes (e.g. Bonali et al., 2012; Tibaldi et al., 2017).
The European Landscape of Innovation can be characterised by low level of investment capability and intention to involve investment, as well as the low level of understanding of R&D trends and funding opportunities in the SME sector. As for the R&D networks, there is a disconnection and the entrepreneurial attitude of commercialisation is also lagging behind. In general, public R&D is not connected with business, which makes the utilisation of research results burdensome, and it requires high cost to fail.
