An Accessible Ocean Workshop.

Online, 10/05/2022.

NEANIAS contributed in the Ocean Decade initiative of United Nations by organizing a Satellite Event in the upcoming “An Accessible Ocean” Ocean Decade Laboratories event.

NEANIAS discussed and demonstrated novel, cutting-edge cloud services tackling critical aspects of underwater mapping tasks.

About the workshop:

Seafloor mapping is closely related to studying and understanding the ocean, which has increasingly raised interest in the past years. Coastal management, habitat loss, underwater cultural heritage, natural disasters, marine resources and offshore installations have underlined the need of charting the seabed. In the framework of the UN ‘Ocean Decade Laboratories’ a workshop presenting Underwater Cloud Services will take place.  This novel cloud software offered through the EC H2020 NEANIAS project support aforementioned challenges by implementing Open Science procedures through the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The services produce user-friendly, cloud-based solutions addressing bathymetry processing, seafloor.

Scheduling:

The workshop was held at 11 May 3:00PM – 6:00PM CEST.

Target Group:

The event is aimed at academia, industry, public sector: archaeologists, geologists, oil & gas engineers, renewable energy planners, submarine geohazards, computer vision/ machine learning software engineers, insurance.

Topics:

  • EOSC ecosystem and Open Science aspects.
  • NEANIAS Underwater Services.
  • Bathymetry Mapping from Acoustic Data (Demo).
  • Seafloor Mosaicing from Optical Data (Demo).
  • Seabed Classification from Multispectral, Multibeam Data (Demo).
  • Validation and End-user perspectives.
  • Questions, Hands-On session.

Expected Outcomes:

The expected outcomes of the activity are the following:

  • Knowledge regarding Open Science EU initiatives and Available Open Cloud Software.
  • Knowledge regarding NEANIAS EU project and underwater services.
  • Experience with Bathymetry mapping, Seafloor mosaicking and Seabed classification Cloud Software.
  • Technical skills in exploiting and operating EOSC services.
