  5. I already received funding for this research from the government funding, but I can’t implement this specific part of the project I am applying, because of the lack of infrastructure at my institute. Can I apply for funding?
  6. I work in a totally different field of science, not related to NEANIAS Atmosphere, Underwater and Space services. Does it make any sense to apply?

 1. I guess that the collaboration and the work to be carried out in the frame of my project would take some month longer, than 3 months. Is it possible to prolong the collaboration with NEANIAS?

Yes, it is possible to prolong the collaboration with NEANIAS experts, and use the services for a longer period of time. In this case NEANIAS experts will evaluate the reasons and added value of prolonging the support to your project.

2. What happens if the budget of my project exceeds the limits of EU funding received in the frame of NEANIAS?

Each request will be handled individually. In case the service you intend to use exceeds the limits of EU funding received in the frame of NEANIAS, our service providers might calculate the price they can keep providing their services.

3. I am a PhD student at a university, can I apply for the Open Call, in order to receive funding for my research?

Yes, you can, in case you did not receive funding for the same project from other sources. We encourage you to apply on behalf of your research institute/university, instead of a private individual.

4. Can I apply as a private individual, if I work at a research institute?

Yes, you can, but we encourage you to apply instead as part of a Team of researchers (3 researchers), or on behalf of the research institute.

5. I already received funding for this research from the government funding, but I can’t implement this specific part of the project I am applying, because of the lack of infrastructure at my institute. Can I apply for funding?

No, you can not receive funding from NEANIAS, if you already received funding from other sources, neither from the EU or from any government funding. It is not possible to do double-financing on the same project in the frame of NEANIAS.

6. I work in a totally different field of science, not related to NEANIAS Atmosphere, Underwater and Space services. Does it make any sense to apply?

Yes, we suggest to apply on the NEANIAS program. We intend to foster interdisciplinary research.

7. Can I use all services of NEANIAS?

Theoretically yes, but practically, as NEANIAS has created more than 10+ services, we do not think it could be possible to use all services within 3 months. We ask you to choose from NEANIAS services the ones, which would provide the most added value to your research.

8. Can I use the infrastructure of NEANIAS Partners? If so, is there any limit?

Yes, you can use the infrastructure of NEANIAS partners. We kindly ask you to highlight this request in the application form, or latest during the interview with NEANIAS experts. The limit of using NEANIAS partner’s infrastructure depends on the nature and real need of your project from a technical point of view on using these services. This request will be handled and confirmed by NEANIAS experts.

Purpose of the call

European Start-ups often face difficulties in the early phases, mostly because of the lack of high-quality infrastructure and human resources available to test and efficiently develop their technology. NEANIAS aims to provide technical and financial support to tackle these challenges in similar projects.

The purpose of this Open Call is to spark and support the development of a wide variety of innovation projects, by providing novel services created in the frame of the NEANIAS project, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and contributing to advance research and innovation in Europe. The overarching goal is to build up and strengthen the European innovation community by identifying and supporting innovative projects with novel services developed in the Underwater, Atmospheric and Space research fields.

Innovation in this scope may refer to (a) new operation models for existing services, that can exploit NEANIAS resources (b) improving existing services utilizing NEANIAS offerings to increase their overall offering (c) brand new services inspired by NEANIAS offerings (d) new services in need offerings such as NEANIAS and EOSC ones, and many more. Award winners will have to show strong reuse of NEANIAS offerings and valid sustainability potential.

Background

NEANIAS drives the co-design and delivery of innovative thematic services, derived from state-of-the-art research assets and practices in three major sectors: Underwater, Atmospheric and Space research, each engaging multitudinous academic and business groups, numerous researchers, professionals and governmental entities.

NEANIAS Project partners have been developing 10+ novel services in hopes of overcoming emerging challenges; like bringing together actors from several disciplines (astrophysics, planetary, ocean, climate, archaeology, geology, computer science and more) to ultimately create opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

What kind of projects are we looking for?

We are looking for innovative projects, which meet the following criteria:

  • Novelty: By using one or more services of the NEANIAS project (please check the service list of NEANIAS), a significant impact can be made and achieved on your project in terms of novelty.
  • Exclusivity: The project can utilise NEANIAS services, which provide an answer to research needs, which would otherwise not be available by using internal competencies.
  • Technical excellence and industrial relevance: The proposed project provides technical excellence, as by developing a new product and/or service, a novel, innovative technology/service can be developed. The developed product has a novelty and relevance in terms of added value in the given industry.
  • Feasibility, Sustainability, and Viability: The proposed solution is using NEANIAS services for a limited period, and by utilising these services the added value of NEANIAS is straightforward, and quantifiable metrics are defined.
