Online, 21-23/04/2021.

The hackathon was co-organized by the NEANIAS, I4Sea and INFORE projects from April 21 to 23, 2021, online. The event was kindly supported by ATHENA RC. The event started during the BRIDs and completed at the end of the week. Challenges were integrated from the three projects, providing the participants access to real world scenarios, business cases and open issues.

The main opportunity of this hackathon was to fuel new thinking in the holistic analysis of satellite, bathymetric, VMS, AIS, environmental, meteorological, fisheries and archaeological data and exploitation of new, cutting edge services in the domain of fisheries, marine traffic and underwater domain. Copernicus, EMODnet, NEANIAS, i4sea, INFORE, FAO, Eurostat, Natura2000, AIS data from Marine Traffic are among the relevant datasets that were available.

Eleni Petra represented NEANIAS as member of the Blue Research and Innovation Days Hackathon Programme committee, and Evi Nomikou (WP2 Leader), Kalliopi Baika, Danai Lampridou, Valsamis, and Makis Ntouskos were the NEANIAS representatives in the Blue Research and Innovation Days Hackathon Scientific Committee.

All blue economy (marine, fisheries, underwater) enthusiasts: data scientists and practitioners, students, researchers, representatives from both private and public sector, that work to improve the fisheries, marine, underwater and environmental management with applications in energy, geohazards management, underwater archaeology, or develop ICT solutions for marine, underwater monitoring were invited to join. The event was of particular interest for students, master students, PhD students, post docs, early career researchers, SMEs, scientists and experts from start-ups.

The hackathon challenges were the following:

  • Future Location Prediction (FLP) of fishing vessels involving the design and implementation of ML solutions.
  • Detecting navigation patterns of sets of vessels that have similar characteristics in terms of location area and way of moving.
  • On-line Image Annotation Tool for Underwater Images.
  • Route design for Submarine cables.

Promoting by the above challenges the design and development of new approaches and novel solutions related to various Blue Economy aspects.

7 Teams and 30 participants took part in the Hackathon where 5 teams finally presented their work: Blue Team, GTeam, SΤeam, Marine Analyst and Team #7. The winners and the awards are presented below:

Congratulation to all the participants for your great work!!
