About us

The National Observatory of Athens is the first research Institution created in Greece (1842). Besides basic and applied research and services to the society, these Institutes provide the facilities for graduate student training in collaboration with other Greek and foreign Universities. NOA hosts the UNESCO Chair for Natural Disasters and the Greek Focal Point of the Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS), operates the National Seismological Network, etc. The activities of the National Observatory of Athens are organized in 3 research Institutes: The Institute of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing, the Institute of Environmental Research and Sustainable Development, and the Geodynamics Institute (NOAIG). NOA joins the consortium with NOAIG institute.

NOAIG’s aim is the study and the promotion of research in the fields of: seismology, physics of the earth's interior, geophysics, plate tectonics, volcanology and geothermy, neotectonics and seismotectonics. The main tasks of NOAIG are collection and processing of various seismological - geophysical data, the elaboration of research projects and relevant studies, the training and services provided to third bodies. NOA presents high scientific capabilities and in‐house expertise in multidisciplinary space and geophysical sciences spanning from seismology, geophysics to Earth Observation techniques and applications. NOA research staff members have long experience in the analysis and interpretation of measurements from space‐borne and groundbased instruments, and in the theoretical development and elaboration of tools and techniques. NOA partcipates in the Open Science Cloud H2020 Project EOSC-hub-H2020-EINFRA-2017.

Main role in the project

NOA has 3 roles in the project: (a) as validator of the work performed by the project mainly in the Underwater sector (b) as the bridge of EPOS and the services of NEANIAS and (c) as a link and engagement actor for communities in several sectors (astronomy, planetary science, geology, athmospheric observation etc).

EU Flag  NEANIAS is a Research and Innovation Action funded by European Union under Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme via grant agreement No.863448.
